Asset Performance Analysis Process

Introduction: What Is Asset Performance Analysis?

TWAICE Asset Performance Analysis is a data-driven approach to evaluating the performance and health of your BESS across its entire lifecycle - from commissioning to ongoing operations and augmentation planning.

TWAICE’s Asset Performance Analysis combines advanced data analytics with engineering expertise to assess key performance indicators such as capacity, DC resistance, and cell-level behavior.

By analyzing operational and test data, it provides a comprehensive and interactive view of system performance and provides an independent, third-party validation of your supplier’s safety and performance claims.

This enables:

  • Early detection of underperformance or weak components

  • Independent validation of supplier specifications and warranty claims

  • A reliable performance baseline for tracking degradation over time

  • Data-driven decision-making across commissioning, maintenance, and augmentation

📊 What You Receive

TWAICE’s Asset Performance Analysis deliverables consist of two primary components:

  1. Executive Summary Report (PDF)

Provides a clear and concise overview of key findings, system performance, detected issues, and recommended actions – an assessment that cross-references multiple KPIs (see below).

  2. Detailed & Interactive Digital Report (via the TWAICE Platform)

In-depth analysis with interactive dashboards that visualize the following KPIs:

  • Energy capacity

  • DC-DC round-trip efficiency (RTE)

  • DC resistance (DCR)

  • Temperature spreads

  • Voltage spreads

  • Anomalies or inconsistencies in module or string behavior

In addition to these two formal deliverables, TWAICE engineers will walk through the results with your team during a scheduled call.

⏱️ Timeline: Ready in 10 working days

In most instances, engagement with TWAICE occurs as the site is being commissioned. TWAICE acts as an independent third party, providing external recommendations and guidance on commissioning best practices.

Typically, the full Asset Performance Analysis process spans 1-2 months and is influenced by the date(s) that the test profiles are run on the BESS, the timeline for data connection, and the timeline for system onboarding onto the TWAICE platform.

Once the system is onboarded and TWAICE receives data from the tests, the Digital Commissioning analysis and Executive Summary are delivered within 10 working days.

🔎 Process: Step by step (commissioning example)

1. BESS onboarding

This step is typically completed during onboarding of the TWAICE BESS Analytics platform.
TWAICE and the customer jointly define and prepare the system configuration:

  • Establish the BESS hierarchy (e.g. number and configuration of PCS, strings, modules, cells)

  • Verify key system metadata such as nominal capacity, cell chemistry, etc.

2. Data connection set up

This step is central to the process.

TWAICE sets up a secure data connection to your BESS, historian, or datalake:

  • Enables real-time or batch data transmission to the TWAICE Platform

  • Includes a data quality and completeness check before test execution

  • Guarantees that the analysis is based on accurate, high-resolution information

3. Configure & execute test profiles

Next, the relevant parties perform the tests on your system.

TWAICE provides recommended load profiles and “best practice” guidelines to ensure the tests produce accurate and comparable results across systems and sites.

These tests typically include:

  • Capacity test: a full charge–discharge cycle

  • DC Resistance (DCR) test: pulse sequences at approx. 50% SoC

📘 For detailed instructions, setup parameters, and environmental recommendations, see our dedicated article on Asset Performance Analysis Test Profiles.

🟡 Important Notes:

  • During the commissioning, TWAICE advises that a continuous data connection to the storage is maintained while the test profiles are performed. If this is not possible the data can be stored locally and shared with TWAICE via batch transfer.

  • TWAICE can also analyze historical test data upon request; however, results may be limited if test profiles do not meet TWAICE’s analysis criteria (e.g., symmetric charge / discharge currents, sufficient rest periods before current is applied, etc.). For more information, please contact TWAICE Customer Success at support@twaice.com.

4. Analysis

Once the data has been collected, TWAICE engineers perform an in-depth evaluation of the test:

  • Analyze the dataset to evaluate energy capacity, efficiency, and resistance values

  • Detect anomalies, inconsistencies, or underperforming components

  • Create and display aggregated visualizations on the TWAICE platform

  • Where possible, benchmark the results against comparable systems to establish an operational baseline

5. Digital report delivery

TWAICE delivers a comprehensive digital report consisting of:

  • An executive summary highlighting KPIs, findings, and recommendations

  • An interactive dashboard for detailed performance exploration

TWAICE engineers will also walk you through the results in a dedicated review call.
