Tesla Systems Sensor Requirements Guide

Written by Ece Aras

Introduction

The TWAICE BESS Analytics platform enables adaptation to Tesla Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), providing advanced performance and operational analytics on Tesla assets.

Tesla Megapack systems are delivered as fully integrated, containerized energy storage units, combining batteries, inverters, and thermal management into a single operational unit . As a result of this architecture, data access is typically available only at the Megapack (AC combiner) level, rather than at lower hierarchy levels such as modules or racks.

In this article we aim to guide you through expected sensors from Tesla systems to enable TWAICE analytics.

Note: This guide applies specifically to Tesla BESS, where data is typically available only at the Megapack level. For non-Tesla systems, TWAICE supports deeper component-level analytics (e.g. string, PCS, and module level).

Hierarchy Components

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) follow a hierarchical structure of components and sensors. Tesla storages currently expose sensor data only on two hierarchy levels:

Name

TWAICE hierarchy

Definition

System

System

Represents the complete BESS installation as a single operational unit. Includes all electrical and control subsystems required for operation.

Megapack

AC Combiner

The Megapack is Tesla's integrated, modular lithium-ion battery system that includes Batteries, Power conversion systems & Thermal management.

All of this is packaged into a single container-sized unit.

Required Sensors

TWAICE can onboard all available Tesla sensor data. However, we require a minimum set of sensor data to enable the features available for Tesla systems within the TWAICE platform.

We recommend the following sensor inputs to be shared with TWAICE:

Data Resolution & Quality

  • The typical time resolution of these sensors is 1 minute.

  • The minimum accepted time resolution is 5 minutes.
